The European Union has contributed €22.85 million to support refugee programmes in Jordan, benefiting initiatives led by UNHCR and the World Food Programme (WFP). The funding will address the urgent needs of the most vulnerable refugees and their host communities, while also fostering self-reliance for those able to work.
The support ensures a social safety net for refugees unable to work due to age, disability, or medical conditions. For refugees with the potential to engage in livelihoods, the funds will help develop skills and create opportunities for employment in collaboration with partner organizations.
Maria Stavropoulou, UNHCR Representative in Jordan, highlighted the significance of the contribution, noting that it comes at a time of funding cuts and will help meet immediate needs while supporting Jordan’s resilience as a refugee host. WFP Representative Antonella D’Aprile emphasized that the €2.13 million allocated to WFP will bolster complementary efforts to improve refugees’ skills and employability, addressing food insecurity driven by limited income opportunities.
EU Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to refugee support, noting that nearly 200,000 refugees, representing 44,500 households, will receive essential assistance over the next 18 months through UNHCR programmes. The project will ensure continued basic needs assistance, providing a lifeline to those most in need in both camps and host communities.
