H.E. Dr. Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al-Nuaimi, Attorney General of Qatar, and H.E. Mr. Cristian Tudor, Ambassador of the European Union to Qatar, inaugurated a two-day workshop on September 8 titled “Regulatory Frameworks and Practices in the Digital Age: Lessons from Qatar and the European Union.” Organized jointly by the Public Prosecution of Qatar and the EU Delegation to Qatar, the workshop is led by international experts from the European University Institute specializing in digital governance.
The initiative underscores both Qatar’s and the EU’s commitment to keeping pace with global digital transformations. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Tudor emphasized the partnership’s focus on upholding the rule of law, safeguarding online rights and freedoms, and guiding technological innovation responsibly to ensure digital progress benefits the public.
The workshop is designed to enhance mutual understanding of regulatory challenges in the digital sphere and facilitate the exchange of expertise between Qatari and European institutions. It includes practical discussions and real case studies to build national capacities while embedding human rights principles—such as freedom of expression, privacy, and non-discrimination—at the heart of sustainable digital policies, in line with the United Nations Global Digital Compact.
As digital transformation accelerates, regulatory and legal challenges—such as disinformation, privacy threats, and expanded surveillance—also grow. The workshop seeks to address these issues by updating regulatory frameworks to promote digital justice and ensure that technology serves both individuals and society.
Participants include representatives from Qatar’s Public Prosecution, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Supreme Council of the Judiciary, and the National Cybersecurity Agency, reflecting a comprehensive national effort to strengthen digital governance and policy development.
