Burkina Faso’s government has approved a loan of 187.83 million euros (approximately $220 million) from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to fund a series of vital road rehabilitation projects. This loan will be supplemented by a national contribution of 25.81 million euros (140.1 billion CFA francs) to support the overall funding of the infrastructure improvements.
The funding will be used to rehabilitate 187.8 kilometers of roads, partially finance the construction and paving of the Koudougou-Yako section of National Road 13, and acquire five road work brigades along with two locally-made asphalt plants. These projects are designed to enhance the transportation infrastructure serving populations across several regions, including Tannounyan, Nakambé, Nando, Nazinon, Oubri, Yaadga, and Djôrô.
Authorities expect these improvements to reduce transport costs and travel times, while improving access to key port markets and critical agricultural and mining production zones. As a landlocked country, Burkina Faso aims to optimize its logistics network, which is essential for the efficient movement of imports and exports.
In addition to economic benefits, the government highlighted that the road projects would enhance security in regions affected by terrorism. The improved infrastructure is also expected to positively impact several other sectors of the national economy, contributing to broader development goals.
