The William Penn Foundation has announced nearly $10 million in special grant funding to support 19 organizations working to defend democratic values, respond to emerging federal actions, and assist non-profit organizations navigating crises. This funding is separate from the Foundation’s regular grantmaking programs, ensuring ongoing support for its broader initiatives.
Recent federal executive orders, legislation, and policy changes have threatened the independence of state and local governments, raised doubts about future election integrity, disrupted programmatic and financial planning for many non-profits, and placed immigrant, LGBTQ, minority, and low-income communities at risk. These developments represent a reversal of decades of progress in civil rights, personal liberties, equality, and environmental stewardship, areas the Foundation and its partners have championed for more than 80 years in the Philadelphia region.
The Foundation’s grants were developed in direct response to needs expressed by grantees and non-profit leaders. They provide technical expertise to help organizations understand and adapt to federal policy changes, professional networks for collaboration and information-sharing, and policy and legal support to ensure community voices are represented. Additional support includes assistance for organizational transitions, helping non-profits merge, close, or adjust operations, and funding to address basic needs for individuals impacted by federal actions.
The William Penn Foundation hopes these grants act as a bridge to new solutions amid diminishing federal resources and ongoing policy uncertainty. The Foundation encourages other funders and philanthropists to collaborate in supporting these efforts, emphasizing collective action to uphold truth, equity, and justice. In this challenging moment, the Foundation reiterates its commitment to standing with communities and non-profits in the region, offering both practical support and solidarity.
