Nigeria Opens Multiple Grant and Program Opportunities for Youth, Women, and SMEs in 2025

Dated: September 4, 2025

Nigeria is set for a wave of empowerment and development in 2025 as numerous domestic and international organizations roll out new application calls for grants, accelerators, and capacity-building programs targeting youth, women, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Key Takeaways

  • New funding and training opportunities are open in sectors such as technology, education, agriculture, and community development.
  • Major programs target youth, women, and SMEs, with application deadlines throughout the first half of 2025.
  • International partners—including Google, WTO, and the Japanese government—are actively supporting Nigerian initiatives.

Major Grants Focused on Women and Digital Empowerment

One of the year’s key highlights is Nigeria’s selection as a beneficiary country for the Women’s Empowerment in the Digital Economy (WEIDE) Fund, a joint initiative of the World Trade Organization and the International Trade Centre. The fund aims to boost women-led businesses by providing two types of grants: Discovery Grants (up to $5,000) for early-stage ventures exploring digital trade, and Booster Grants (up to $30,000) for scaling digital operations into global markets.

In addition to financial backing, WEIDE offers technical assistance, mentoring, and connections to international business networks. Nigerian Export Promotion Council will help guide local women entrepreneurs interested in participating. Applications are open from late April to mid-May 2025.

Digital Transformation and Tech-Driven Initiatives

Several calls have emerged for tech startups and organizations driving innovation:

  • Google for Startups Accelerator Africa: The ninth cohort focuses on AI-driven startups, especially those at the Seed to Series A stage. The program provides intensive training, up to $350,000 in cloud credits, and expert mentorship. Nigerian startups working with AI, machine learning, and digital transformation are strongly encouraged to apply by May 9, 2025.
  • Digital Resource Centers in Universities: Organizations are invited to submit projects to enhance digital resource infrastructure at Nigerian universities, a step that seeks to close the gap in digital access and empower the next generation of digital professionals.

Community and Grassroots Support

International donors are prioritizing grassroots development. The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria has called for applications to the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP)—a program focusing on community projects in health, nutrition, agriculture, and infrastructure. Non-profits, educational institutions, and local government bodies can apply for funding up to 10 million Japanese Yen (approx. $67,000), with the deadline set for June 13, 2025. Projects selected must be completed within one year.

Expanding the Impact

Beyond these flagship programs, dozens of other calls are open for diverse sectors like healthcare innovation, entrepreneurship, and media. Many encourage cross-disciplinary proposals, particularly those emphasizing gender inclusion and youth engagement. The cumulative effect is expected to enhance business growth, job creation, and sustainable development nationwide.

Application Tips and Next Steps

Prospective applicants should:

  1. Review eligibility criteria carefully for each program.
  2. Prepare project proposals that clearly outline expected outcomes and impact.
  3. Monitor official announcements for opening and closing dates.

By leveraging these opportunities, Nigerian entrepreneurs, non-profits, and educational institutions can help shape a more inclusive and digitally driven future for the country.
