The UNHCR Representation for the Nordic and Baltic Countries is hosting a one-day online training aimed at strengthening the capacity of refugee law practitioners in Iceland. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, provides assistance and advocates for the rights of forcibly displaced and stateless people worldwide. In Iceland, UNHCR engages with the government, local authorities, civil society organizations, and media to safeguard the rights and well-being of those who have been forced to flee. The agency also supports the Icelandic government in implementing legal frameworks related to asylum, protection, and statelessness, while fostering capacity development in the field of asylum.
The training will focus on the temporariness of asylum, specifically addressing the cessation or “withdrawal of international protection.” It aims to equip Icelandic lawyers with practical knowledge on applying the 1951 Refugee Convention in cessation cases and to clarify the distinctions between cessation, revocation, and cancellation in refugee law.
All legal practitioners interested in representing and advocating for individuals in need of international protection are encouraged to participate, ensuring enhanced legal support and advocacy for refugees in Iceland.
