The Office of Public Works (OPW) and Clare County Council have announced the completion of the €5.2 million Springfield Flood Relief Scheme, designed to protect 21 homes in the Springfield area from significant flooding. The project represents a collaborative effort between the two organizations and is part of a wider programme of flood relief measures across County Clare and Ireland as a whole.
Minister of State Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran highlighted the scheme’s role within a broader national context, noting that it joins 56 completed flood relief projects safeguarding around 13,600 properties nationwide. He emphasized that Clare has seen significant investment in flood mitigation, including schemes in Ennis, Sixmilebridge, Shannon Town & Environs, Kilkee, Bunratty, and Kilrush, as well as €3.9 million allocated to 43 smaller projects under the OPW Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
Cllr Paul Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, welcomed the project as a crucial support for residents and businesses affected by severe flooding in Springfield in recent years. He expressed gratitude to the OPW and the Minister for their continued investment in flood protection infrastructure throughout the county.
Alan Farrell, Director of Services for Physical Development at Clare County Council, emphasized the scheme’s impact on alleviating stress and concern for local residents. He underscored the importance of collaboration in tackling flooding challenges and highlighted the Council’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with the OPW for future priority flood relief works in County Clare.
