The Government of Canada reaffirmed its support for 2SLGBTQI+ communities, highlighting the ongoing progress of the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan, which aims to promote equality and address challenges faced by these communities. Minister Rechie Valdez, joined by MPs Hedy Fry and Wade Chang, announced initiatives including the 2SLGBTQI+ Entrepreneurship Program, which provides $25 million to help entrepreneurs overcome barriers, and funding of up to $75 million to support over 160 projects promoting inclusion and community capacity-building. The federal Unity campaign also continues, encouraging Canadians to actively combat stigma through education and reflection.
As part of the Action Plan on Combatting Hate, the government has allocated $3 million to Fierté Canada Pride over 2024 and 2025 to support security for Pride festivals, offsetting rising insurance and security costs amid increased anti-2SLGBTQI+ hate. These measures aim to protect participants at Pride events and ensure safe, inclusive celebrations across the country.
Leaders emphasized the importance of these investments not only in providing support but in transforming lives and fostering safety, dignity, and opportunity for 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians. MPs highlighted that these programs empower entrepreneurship, strengthen social and economic inclusion, and send a strong message that equality is a core Canadian value. Community leaders praised the government’s efforts in funding security, capacity-building, and inclusive entrepreneurship, noting that such initiatives ensure 2SLGBTQI+ individuals can thrive in both personal and professional spheres.
Statistics underscore the critical need for such measures: in 2024, 46% of people of sexual and gender diversity reported experiencing violence, compared to 23% of the general population, and 89% reported some form of violence or discrimination over their lifetimes. To address these challenges, Women and Gender Equality Canada invests $75 million over five years through the 2SLGBTQI+ Community Capacity Fund and Projects Fund, supporting organizations, networks, and initiatives that challenge discrimination and harmful norms. The Entrepreneurship Program, administered by Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce, further provides resources, mentorship, and research to help 2SLGBTQI+ business owners start and grow their enterprises.
