Creative BC has awarded $210,000 in funding to 14 British Columbia filmmakers to support the early-stage development of original, B.C.-owned documentary and factual content. Each project will receive a $15,000 grant through the Documentary and Factual Development Fund, which is jointly supported by the Rogers Group of Funds. This initiative is part of the Reel Focus BC suite of programs, designed to drive domestic motion picture activity and foster the creation of intellectual property owned and controlled by B.C. creators. Since its inception, the fund has supported 94 filmmakers with resources from the $1 million multi-year program.
The funding specifically targets individual documentary and factual projects, whether standalone productions or series, before they are greenlit by broadcasters or streaming platforms. By providing financial support during early-stage development, the program removes barriers to entry, enabling filmmakers to create higher-quality pitches and secure further investment. This approach strengthens B.C.’s capacity to produce impactful, globally competitive stories and allows access to subject matter experts for more compelling storytelling.
Creative BC CEO Prem Gill highlighted the significance of the program, noting that it has helped establish B.C. as a hub for documentary storytelling and empowered independent producers to create content that competes on the global stage. Program recipients, such as Wapanatahk Media Inc., an Indigenous-owned production company, emphasized that the fund provides crucial opportunities for underrepresented voices to reach wider audiences, strengthening the diversity and impact of stories emerging from the province.
Creative BC, an independent non-profit society supported by the Province of British Columbia, plays a key role in sustaining and growing the province’s creative industries, including motion picture, interactive and digital media, music, and publishing. The society administers tax credit programs, delivers funding and export marketing support, and offers film commission services to attract investment and promote B.C. as a leading destination for domestic and international content creation. Through these efforts, Creative BC acts as a catalyst and ambassador to help the province’s creative sector achieve its full economic, social, environmental, and artistic potential.
