Cambodia’s next generation of construction professionals has gained international exposure and advanced technical skills ahead of the ASEAN Skills Competition, thanks to intensive training supported by the ILO/China Partnership Programme. Five trainees and students completed a two-week wall and floor tiling programme at China’s Zhejiang Construction Technician College (ZCTC) from 30 July to 9 August 2025. The initiative, part of the Belt and Road South-South Cooperation Skills Development Network, focused on practical, hands-on instruction alongside classroom learning, equipping participants with essential competencies for modern construction projects.
The programme covered professional techniques in layout planning, precision cutting, and surface finishing, while also introducing international standards and judging criteria used in global skills competitions. Trainees learned about time management, material optimisation, aesthetic presentation, and occupational safety practices, building the confidence and competitive mindset required for the WorldSkills ASEAN Manila 2025 and future WorldSkills events. ZCTC officials highlighted the importance of “learning by doing” and reinforced the college’s commitment to helping international trainees enhance their skills through its world-class facilities.
Participants reported increased readiness and motivation to represent Cambodia in regional competitions. One trainee emphasized that the programme not only strengthened their technical abilities but also prepared them to serve as future trainers for other youth in Cambodia, contributing to the country’s broader workforce development goals and international competitiveness in skilled trades.
