PrAEctiCe, an EU-funded initiative, is supporting farming communities in sub-Saharan Africa to adopt more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. At the core of the project is a decision support tool (DST) designed to promote agro-ecological practices and provide smallholder farmers in East Africa with solutions to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity. While the project’s main focus has been on Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, its commercialisation is being led by Nigerian partner Apodissi, broadening its reach across Africa.
In June 2026, a workshop in Lagos highlighted how PrAEctiCe and another EU-funded project, INCiTiS-FOOD, are helping Nigeria address severe food insecurity. With the country’s population projected to reach 400 million by 2050, food production remains a major challenge. Experts stressed that without a shift to sustainable farming, Nigeria will struggle to meet its own needs or contribute to local industries and exports. PrAEctiCe is addressing these concerns through living labs in Ibadan, applying circular agri-food technologies, biofertiliser production, co-creation activities, and healthy food production methods.
The DST under development will provide farmers with real-time monitoring and analysis of water quality, soil health, and crop conditions. Delivered via a mobile app, it will offer timely and practical insights to help farmers respond to challenges in their production process. Currently at an advanced stage of development, the tool is being tested and refined, with Apodissi working alongside digital innovation hubs, cooperatives, and farmers’ associations to expand its adoption across Nigeria.
PrAEctiCe has also signed a memorandum of understanding with CaReFoAfrica, another EU-backed initiative, to strengthen sustainable agriculture and climate resilience in Africa. This collaboration will produce training curricula for farmers, students, and agricultural extension workers, combining resources to build capacity in agro-ecological and climate-smart practices. By linking technology, innovation, and education, PrAEctiCe aims to help secure Africa’s food systems for the future.
