The Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme was established by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in 2009 to provide financial support to local authorities for addressing localized flooding and coastal protection issues. Since its introduction, Wexford County Council has successfully secured funding for 24 projects under this initiative. The scheme is designed to support projects where solutions can be implemented relatively quickly and effectively.
The program allows for funding of up to 90% of project costs for works estimated at €750,000 or less. Each application is assessed by the OPW based on economic, social, and environmental criteria, including a cost-benefit analysis. The scheme prioritizes projects that offer clear, measurable benefits without causing significant impacts on flood risk in other areas.
Typically, projects that fall under the standard responsibilities of local authorities are not eligible for full OPW funding. However, partial funding may be considered if the works also help reduce flood risk to properties. The timing and execution of any approved works remain the responsibility of the respective local authorities.
This scheme continues to play a key role in supporting communities in Ireland, providing targeted assistance to enhance flood resilience and coastal protection through locally managed projects.
