Overseas development agencies, including Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Misereor, have pledged continued support for the Church and civil organizations in Africa despite funding cuts from their home countries. The announcement was made during the 20th Plenary Assembly of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), held from July 30 to August 4 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Misereor, the development agency of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Germany, noted that its funding sources, which include private donations, church contributions, and public funds, have been significantly reduced. Cuts in German government allocations for church-based development cooperation, along with declining parish donations, have forced the agency to scale down its financial commitments.
In light of these reductions, Misereor encouraged African Catholic Bishops to strengthen local fundraising efforts to sustain development projects. While acknowledging financial constraints, the agency affirmed its intention to maintain cooperation with the Church and civil society in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, emphasizing that partnerships extend beyond financial assistance.
Catholic Relief Services also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Church in Africa, recognizing the continent as a priority. Despite financial challenges, the organization pledged to continue collaborating with SECAM and its regional and national bodies to promote integral human development and contribute to a more just and united world.
