Governor Kathy Hochul has announced over $20 million in funding for clean water initiatives across New York State through two programs: the Green Innovation Grant Program and the Wastewater Infrastructure Engineering Planning Grants. The funding, released during National Water Quality Month, aims to support communities in upgrading water infrastructure, protecting public health, and enhancing resilience to extreme weather.
The Green Innovation Grant Program will distribute $17 million to 12 projects focused on stormwater management and water efficiency using nature-based solutions. These projects will help reduce flooding and runoff while improving water quality and stimulating local economies. Notable beneficiaries include New York City’s Green-Wood Cemetery, the City of Lockport, and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
An additional $3 million will be provided to 59 communities through the Wastewater Infrastructure Engineering Planning Grants. These funds will help towns and villages conduct necessary engineering studies and reports that are essential for launching well-designed, cost-effective infrastructure upgrades. Projects range from evaluating the extension of sewer systems along Lake George to improving wastewater treatment facilities in Medina, Morrisville, and Oneonta.
State officials and stakeholders praised the initiative for reinforcing New York’s leadership in clean water infrastructure investment. They emphasized the importance of modernizing systems to improve water quality, public health, and environmental protection while creating jobs and enhancing climate resilience. The Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) is overseeing the grant distribution, with ongoing support from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and local government leaders.
The announcement reinforces New York’s broader commitment to water quality. Governor Hochul’s administration has committed a total of $6 billion to clean water infrastructure since 2017, including $500 million in the FY26 budget. The EFC continues to invite communities to apply for additional funding and track progress via their interactive project dashboard.
