The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a $3.5 million contribution from the Government of Indonesia to support its school meal programme in Afghanistan. With this funding, WFP will procure over 1,200 metric tons of fortified biscuits, benefiting 200,000 primary school children over a three-month period. For many students, this daily snack is their only nutritious meal, helping them stay healthy and focused in class. Since its launch over two decades ago, WFP’s school feeding initiative has improved enrollment, attendance, and learning outcomes. In 2024, participating schools recorded an 11% increase in enrollment and average attendance of 87%, exceeding the agency’s target.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, seaweed farming is emerging as a promising pathway to sustainable coastal development. According to a new FAO report, the sector has grown by 66% over the past decade. Seaweed cultivation offers a low-carbon method of food production while also supporting rural livelihoods. However, most regional efforts remain small-scale, despite countries like Brazil, Chile, and Venezuela leading in production. Experts believe that expanding species variety, enhancing research and technology—including AI and biotechnology—and involving women and youth can unlock the industry’s full potential and deliver both economic and environmental benefits.
Meanwhile, Somalia is grappling with severe drought conditions in its central and northern regions, affecting hundreds of thousands of people. The UN’s humanitarian coordination office (OCHA) reports rising food insecurity, reduced access to water and pasture, and widespread disruption to livelihoods. A joint UN assessment is underway in Puntland and Somaliland to determine urgent needs. FAO data shows that over 880,000 people are living in severely drought-affected areas across 16 districts, with more than 160 boreholes no longer operational. Although the Somalia Humanitarian Fund is preparing to release emergency aid, only 17% of the required funding has been secured so far.
