At the heart of IITA–CGIAR’s mission lies a strong dedication to improving livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa by ensuring that advanced agricultural research translates into real-world benefits. This commitment was recently brought to life through a transformative outreach event for female yam farmers, jointly organized by Radio IITA and the IITA Yam Breeding Program. The initiative was praised for its practical approach and emphasis on value addition, aiming to empower women and significantly improve their economic prospects.
The event specifically targeted women farmers in south-west Nigeria, equipping them with tools and knowledge to become leading seed yam producers. This initiative not only supported agricultural development but also recognized and reinforced the crucial role that women play in securing food systems and driving rural economies.
The atmosphere at the event was filled with enthusiasm and determination, reflecting the strength and commitment of the participating women. During her welcome address, IITA Head of Communication Katherine Lopez honored their efforts, describing them as the “backbone of our communities” who work tirelessly in both their homes and on the land. She emphasized IITA-CGIAR’s ongoing support for women in agriculture, aiming to help them cultivate both crops and brighter futures for their families and nations.
Lopez also highlighted IITA’s broader commitment to equity in agriculture through its Social Science and Agribusiness initiatives. These programs aim to ensure that innovations reach the people who need them most and that they help shape policies and practices that improve lives across the region.
