Sutton Council has introduced a new community grant aimed at addressing homelessness and enhancing health and wellbeing across the borough. Known as the Prevention Pilot Grant, this initiative will support projects led by local charities, community groups, and faith-based organisations that work to either reduce homelessness or lessen the need for adult social care services.
The Council has made a total of £400,000 available for eligible organisations to bid for. This funding forms part of a broader strategy to provide early intervention and prevent crises before they arise. Citing data from the Local Government Association, the Council emphasized that every £1 spent on preventative support could result in savings of £3.17 in future care costs. The dual aim is to improve the quality of life for residents while also easing financial pressures on local services.
Special encouragement is being given to smaller community groups that may not have previously received Council funding. These organisations can submit applications individually or in partnership with other groups, and Community Action Sutton is available to assist smaller applicants through the bidding process.
Councillor Marian James, the Lead Member for Adults and Children’s Services, highlighted the Council’s commitment to early support measures. She noted that the grants demonstrate a proactive approach to helping people before they reach crisis, emphasizing that partnerships with grassroots organisations can make a significant difference in creating a more resilient and healthy borough.
The final date to submit applications for the Prevention Pilot Grant is 5 September 2025.
