The World Bank’s Board of Directors has approved a €66.3 million (approximately $75 million) loan to support Serbia’s ongoing educational reforms through the Inclusive Primary Education Improvement Project. This initiative aims to enhance learning environments for primary school children across the country.
The project is expected to benefit around 250,000 primary-level students, including those from rural areas, Roma communities, and children with disabilities. It will also support over 20,000 teachers. A major component of the project focuses on upgrading school infrastructure, particularly in underprivileged areas and in municipalities vulnerable to flooding and extreme weather.
As part of the reforms, Serbia will gradually implement the Whole Day School model, which is designed to increase teaching and learning time. This model seeks to bring Serbian education closer to European Union standards by fostering key lifelong learning skills. The initiative also emphasizes building inclusive, energy-efficient, and health-promoting school environments, while enhancing both curricular and extracurricular programs. Special attention will be given to promoting students’ mental well-being.
