Sport England has announced a significant investment aimed at transforming lives in Thurrock and surrounding areas through increased access to sport and physical activity. This initiative is part of the broader Place Partnership investment, which focuses on increasing physical activity levels, reducing inactivity, providing positive experiences for children and young people, and addressing inequalities in communities.
The £250 million funding from the National Lottery and the Exchequer will support over 90 places across England until 2028. In Essex, the beneficiaries include Thurrock, Castle Point, and Harlow, with additional support allocated to Basildon, Colchester, and Tendring due to the successes of the Essex Local Delivery Pilot.
The program seeks to eliminate everyday barriers that prevent people from engaging in regular physical activity, especially in underserved areas. It emphasizes community co-design, tailoring initiatives to the specific needs of each location. Local organizations and projects will be supported to create impactful, sustainable opportunities that foster healthier lifestyles.
Sport England has highlighted that this investment reflects a commitment to grounding interventions in the unique needs and cultural contexts of local communities. By focusing resources on areas of greatest need, the initiative aims to increase participation and reduce health disparities.
Active Essex, a key delivery partner since its inception after the London 2012 Olympics, will lead the implementation. Leveraging insights from the Essex Local Delivery Pilot started in 2017, initiatives such as Beat the Street in South Ockendon and Aveley, walking groups in Koala Park, and Essex Pedal Power are already showing promising results. These efforts are laying the groundwork for a healthier and more connected Essex community.
