The UK government has announced that local leaders across all four nations of the United Kingdom will each receive at least £30 million to direct science and technology funding towards their regional strengths. This initiative, part of the £500 million Local Innovation Partnerships Fund, aims to unlock transformative research and innovations that improve everyday life and stimulate economic growth.
The Glasgow City Region, Cardiff Capital Region, and Belfast/Derry-Londonderry have now joined seven English regions—including Greater Manchester, London, and Liverpool—as recipients of this funding. More areas are expected to be included in the coming months, and high-potential regions not yet covered will have the opportunity to compete for additional funding through an upcoming UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) competition.
The fund builds on the success of the earlier Innovation Accelerators pilot programme, which attracted over £140 million in private investment and created hundreds of jobs across UK cities. The programme demonstrated the value of collaboration between local leaders, research institutions, and industry to deliver practical solutions through research and development.
Examples of the impact already being achieved include projects in Greater Manchester that enhance early detection of heart and lung diseases, Glasgow-led innovations to identify colon cancer sooner, and AI-powered transit solutions in the West Midlands. Additionally, sustainable housing initiatives led by Greater Manchester’s Future Homes partnership are addressing energy efficiency and climate challenges in UK housing.
