The Nuffield Foundation has launched a new Strategic Review supported by a £150 million funding commitment aimed at addressing the UK’s most pressing social and economic challenges. Over the next five years, it will invest £30 million annually to generate evidence and shape solutions to complex societal issues that are hindering the country’s long-term wellbeing and prosperity.
This strategic shift comes in response to significant global and domestic changes affecting UK policy and society. Key areas of focus for the Foundation include the social foundations essential for future economic growth, the impact of demographic shifts on communities and public services, the societal implications of climate transition, the influence of rapid scientific and technological advancement, and the importance of fostering trust in institutions amid growing polarization.
In this new phase, the Foundation will emphasize support for innovative interventions and pioneering institutions that apply evidence to improve lives. This initiative builds on its ongoing mission to expand opportunity, reduce inequality, and promote a more inclusive society. It continues to rely on its core strengths in the fields of education, justice, economy, work, and welfare.
As part of this strategy, the Foundation is reopening its Strategic Fund with £15 million allocated to support bold and transformative research proposals that address major issues on the UK public policy agenda.
The £150 million commitment will also support social and economic policy research grants, with dedicated funding streams for studies on racial diversity, ill-health, and disability. In addition, the Foundation will maintain support for innovative practices and its three research centres: the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, the Ada Lovelace Institute, and the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory.
