Lebanon’s ongoing political, economic, and social crises have highlighted the urgent need for robust and sustainable healthcare solutions. In response, a high-level ceremony was held on July 23 at the Amel Primary Health Care Center (PHCC) in Bazourieh to launch the second phase of the SAQIRH project. Hosted by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and Première Urgence Internationale (PUI), the event gathered key national and international stakeholders, including the Lebanese Minister of Public Health, the French Ambassador, and representatives from various donor agencies and partners.
The event highlighted the country’s persistent health sector challenges and recognized collaborative efforts to maintain healthcare access. The SAQIRH II project plays a central role in ensuring the continuity of essential primary healthcare services for vulnerable populations throughout Lebanon.
Funded by France via AFD and implemented by PUI, AMEL Association International, and Médecins du Monde (MdM), the second phase of SAQIRH will continue supporting 19 accredited PHCCs across multiple regions, including the Bekaa, North Lebanon, Akkar, Beirut, Mount Lebanon, and the South. Building on the first phase’s success, which delivered over one million healthcare services since 2020, the new phase seeks to both sustain and enhance service delivery.
The expanded project will provide consultations, medications, and diagnostic services while also focusing on strengthening the accreditation of PHCCs, increasing healthcare worker training, improving supply chain systems, and integrating mental health and psychosocial support into primary care. These improvements reflect a broader goal, shared with EU partners, of developing a more inclusive, resilient, and financially sustainable healthcare system for all residents of Lebanon.
