In response to the recent floods in Honduras, the European Union (EU) has allocated €150,000 (approximately 4.59 million lempiras) in humanitarian aid to support the most affected populations. The funding targets around 5,000 people in the department of Ocotepeque, one of the hardest-hit areas by the June floods.
The floods and landslides in Ocotepeque caused significant damage to homes, crops, and public infrastructure. A major concern has been the disruption of water supply systems, which left thousands without access to safe drinking water.
The EU’s financial support will enable the Honduran Red Cross to provide urgent assistance through the distribution of clean water, purification materials, and hygiene kits. It will also support activities to prevent waterborne and mosquito-borne diseases among the affected population.
This funding is part of the EU’s broader support to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) managed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The DREF provides rapid financial support to national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies responding to emergencies.
The European Union, through its Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), plays a key role in global humanitarian assistance. With a €12 million agreement with the IFRC, the EU supports emergency responses worldwide, ensuring timely aid to communities in crisis. This mechanism enables national societies to access immediate resources and later receive reimbursement in line with humanitarian principles.
