A new programme titled Improving Labour Governance in Papua New Guinea has been launched as a joint effort by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Government of Papua New Guinea, and the Australian Government. This three-year initiative is funded by Australia and supported technically by the ILO. It aims to enhance labour protections, promote social dialogue, and improve the administration of the national labour market to support inclusive economic growth.
The official launch took place on 16 July 2025 at the Ministry for Labour and Employment in Port Moresby. The event was attended by senior government officials and representatives from the ILO and the Australian High Commission. The programme focuses on strengthening labour market governance and will be supported by the Government of Papua New Guinea through key activities, including the execution of the Labour Force Survey.
In addition to financial backing from the Australian Government, the ILO will provide technical and advisory assistance as in-kind support. This collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to the development of a fair, efficient, and well-regulated labour market system in Papua New Guinea.
