Eco Wave Power Global AB, a Swedish company specializing in onshore wave energy technology, has joined the Atlantic Wave Energy Sustainable Deployment Initiative (AWESDI), a €2.45 million transnational project aimed at accelerating the scalable deployment of wave energy across Atlantic coastal regions. The project is funded through the European Union’s Interreg Atlantic Area Programme under Priority 2.1, which focuses on enhancing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
AWESDI is one of the flagship projects under the Atlantic Area Programme, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This programme supports cross-border cooperation in fields like renewable energy, climate resilience, and blue innovation, contributing to the sustainable development of Atlantic communities. The project is coordinated by the Centro de Investigación Mariña (CIM) of the University of Vigo and includes a wide network of research institutions, private companies, and government partners from Portugal, Spain, France, and Ireland.
Eco Wave Power’s contributions to AWESDI include supporting feasibility studies for wave energy sites in Portugal, sharing operational data from its existing installations, validating sustainable design tools, and helping develop a strategic Wave Energy Deployment Roadmap. These efforts are aligned with the company’s expansion in Portugal, where it is preparing for its first megawatt-scale wave energy installation.
The grant funding will facilitate technical advancement, environmental evaluations, and policy planning through collaborations with major European academic and industry stakeholders. This partnership is expected to foster real-world deployment of wave energy while integrating research and policy in support of regional clean energy goals.
AWESDI was one of 24 projects selected for funding in the Atlantic Area Programme’s Third Call, announced during a Monitoring Committee meeting held in Galway, Ireland, on July 3, 2025. The approved projects represent a €55 million investment, with 75% co-funded by the EU, and span three priority themes: blue innovation and competitiveness, blue and green environment, and sustainable coastal tourism and culture.
As a leading project under the “blue and green environment” theme, AWESDI reinforces the importance of wave energy as a sustainable solution for achieving clean energy goals across the Atlantic region, positioning Eco Wave Power as a key industry partner in Europe’s transition to renewable ocean-based energy.
